Maestro dell'Epifania di Fiesole,
aktiv in Florenz, zweite Hälfte 15. Jahrhundert

Das hier vorliegende qualitativ hochwertige Rundbild wurde vormals eigentlich Cosimo di Lorenzo Rosselli (1439-1507) zugeschrieben. Erst Filippo Todini fand überzeugende Argumente, dass es sich um ein Werk des sogenannten Maestro dell'Epifania di Fiesole handelt. Dieser war ein zwar anonymer, jedoch bedeutender Künstler im Florenz des ausklingenden Quattrocento. Sein Schaffen wurde 1967 und 1976 in zwei Beiträgen von Everett Fahy rekonstruiert. So sind die Werke des Maestro dell'Epifania di Fiesole heute recht gut dokumentiert. Stilistisch gibt es hierbei deutliche Anklänge an Rosselli, aber auch an Jacopo del Sellaio (um 1441-1493), Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-1494) und Francesco Botticini (1446 - 1497).

Sowohl aus ikonografischer, als auch aus kompositorischer Sicht gesellt sich unser Gemälde zu einer Reihe anderer weitverbreiteter Darstellungen, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts in Florenz entstanden. Besonders die Werkstätten von Cosimo Rosselli brachten sicherlich über zehn solcher Darstellungen hervor. Es handelt sich hierbei stets um die Figur der Madonna in einer weitläufigen Landschaft, die mit gefalteten Händen vor dem Jesuskind kniet, und zwei Engel, die ebenfalls teilnehmend beten, wobei der eine jedoch (wie auch in unserem Falle) das Kind von hinten stützt, das sich der mütterlichen Umarmung entgegenstreckt. Wenn auch leicht variiert, hat der Maler diese Darstellungsweise des Öfteren aufgegriffen, sodass unser Rundbild mit anderen seiner Darstellungen gut verglichen werden kann, so zum Beispiel mit der Epifania in der Kirche San Francesco in Fiesole, die dem Maler zu seinem Künstlernamen verhalf. Auch andere Werke erinnern stilistisch stark an unser Rundbild, beispielsweise die „Incoronazione della Vergine“ (Galleria degli Uffizi, Florenz), „Madonna adorante il Bambino con San Giovannino“ (vormals Privatbesitz, Schweiz) und die „Sacra Famiglia“ - vormals Sammlung Mason Perkins - die heute in der Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia zu sehen ist. The present high-quality tondo was formerly attributed to Cosimo Rosselli. However it was Filippo Todini, who found convincing arguments for attributing the work to the so called “Maestro dell'Epifania di Fiesole“. He was an anonymous, yet important Florentine artist of the late Quattrocento. Everett Fahy reconstructed his oeuvre in two papers, published in 1967 and 1976. The works by the Maestro dell'Epifania di Fiesole are thus quite well documented. Stylistically, there are strong resonances of Rosselli, but also Jacopo del Sellaio (ca. 1441-1493), Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-1494) and Francesco Botticini (1446-1497). The iconography and composition of our painting is in line with a number of other popular depictions originating in Florence in the second half of the 15th century. The workshops of Cosimo Rosselli, in particular, produced more than ten such works in which the Madonna is always depicted in a wide landscape, kneeling in front of the Christ Child with her hands folded in prayer, and accompanied by two angels who are also in prayer - one of them (as in our case) supporting the back of the child as it reaches out for his mother's embrace. The painter frequently revisited this type of depiction, albeit with minor variations making our tondo easy to compare with other depictions such as the Epifania in the San Francesco church in Fiesole to which the painter owes his alias. Other works are also strongly reminiscent of our tondo, for example the Incoronazione della Vergine (Uffizi Gallery, Florence), Madonna adorante il Bambino con San Giovannino (formerly Swiss private collection) and Sacra Famiglia (formerly Mason Perkins collection, today held at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia).
