Einen tiefen Kanal entlang, der von zwei Booten mit Schiffern befahren wird, schlängeln sich links und rechts Kontorhäuser, auf deren Verwendung die sich im Giebel befindenden Vorsehungen für Flaschenzugaufhängungen hindeuten. Detailreich hat der Künstler die in unterschiedlichem Licht liegenden Mauerwerke herausgearbeitet. Bereichert wird die Szenerie um einige Personen, die dem täglichen Geschäft nachgehen.
Willem Koekkoek war der Sohn des Malers Hermanus Koekkoek d. Ä. und Bruder von Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek. Wie die anderen Mitglieder der Malerfamilie spezialisierte er sich auf Landschaften und Stadtansichten. Er war u.a. tätig in Den Haag, Utrecht, Amsterdam und London. Willem Koekkoek was the son of the painter Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder and brother of Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek. Like the other members of this group of artists he specialised in landscapes and cityscapes. He was active, among other places, in The Hague, Utrecht, Amsterdam and London. Varnish with minor stains and a few minor retouches.
