Piero Dorazio,

Piero Dorazio - Maler, Graphiker, Bildhauer, Kunstdozent und Publizist - gilt als einer der führenden Protagonisten der konkreten Farbmalerei und Wegbereiter der Abstraktion in Italien. Zunächst studierte er Architektur, wandte sich aber 1946 der Malerei zu. 1947 zählte er zu den Unterzeichnern des „Manifesto del Formalismo“ und zu den Mitbegründern der „Gruppo Forma 1“, einer Vereinigung von Künstlern, die sich als Gegenbewegung zum Sozialistischen Realismus in der italienischen Kunst formierte und sich für die Verbreitung abstrakter Kunst engagierte. 1950 gründete er in Rom und Florenz zusammen mit Freunden die Galerie „Age d'Or“ und 1952 in Rom die „Fondazione Origine“ mit dem Ziel, internationale Künstler der Moderne in Italien zu zeigen. Von Anfang an galt Dorazios Interesse der Erforschung von Farbe und Licht. Ende der 1950er Jahre entwickelte der Künstler eine Gitterstruktur, die als dichtes Gewebe sich überlagernder Linien in verschiedenen Farben auf vielen seiner Bilder zu finden ist und die er in den Folgejahren immer wieder moduliert.

Piero Dorazio - painter, graphic artist, sculptor, lecturer and art critic - is regarded as one of the most important protagonists of concrete art and as pioneer of abstraction in Italy. First, he studied architecture, but turned to painting in 1946. In 1947 he was one of the signatories of the “Manifesto del Formalismo” and was co-founder of “Gruppo Forma 1”, a group of artists, formed as countermovement to socialist realism in Italian art, which committed itself to abstract art. In 1950 Dorazio founded together with some friends the gallery “Age d'Or” in Rome and Florence, and in 1952 the “Fondazione Origine” in Rome, which intended to exhibit works by international artists of the modern art in Italy.
Throughout his entire active career Dorazio examined the relationship between colour and light. In the end of the 1950's he developed a grid structure, consisting of overlapping lines, which he used as a modulated pattern for many of his works.
