Pharmazeutische Flasche. Die Flasche bauchig, auf gekehltem Ring mit langem, engem Hals. Auf weißem Fond zarte Bemalung. Unten verläuft ein Band mit der Aufschrift "A/CEPE/ALB" . Darüber steht die Allegorie der Religion mit Helm, flammendem Herz in einer Hand, in der anderen die beiden Gesetzestafeln des Alten Testaments und die Heilige Schrift. Sie steht auf der inselartigen Landzunge zwischen einem grünenden und einem verdorrten Baum, die für Leben und Tod stehen. Darüber steht die Inschrift "FEDE CATTOCLICA" (ital. katholischer Glaube). Bemalung in Blau, Grün, Gelb und Orangerot auf weißem Fond. Am Hals rest.

Anmerkung:
Die Aufschrift könnte Folgendes bedeuten: "A" als Abkürzung für Aqua oder Adeps (Schmalz), "CEPE" als Plural für Cepa (Zwiebeln), "ALB" für alba (weiß).

Anmerkung II:
1625 kam eine neue Ausgabe zu Cesare Ripas ikonografischen Lexikon "Iconoliga" von 1593 heraus, in der ein Artikel zur "Fede Cattolica" stand. Die Neuauflage wurde vom Cavaliere d'Arpino illustriert. Diese Illustration diente wohl als Vorlage für die Bemalung der Vase. Die Parallelen zur Bemalung der vorliegenden Flasche werden besonders in der Behandlung der Gewandfalten deutlich. (9300017)

Globular drug bottle on tapering foot ring with long, narrow neck. Ornamented with delicate painted decoration against a white ground. A scroll underneath inscribed A/CEPE/ALB. Over the scroll a depiction of the allegory of Religion holding a helmet and flaming heart in one hand and the Tablets of Stone from the Old Testament and the Holy Bible in the other. She is standing on an island-like headland between one greening tree and one withered tree, symbolising Life and Death. Inscribed FEDE CATTOCLICA (Italian: Catholic faith) overhead. Painted in blue, green, yellow and tangerine against a white ground. Neck restored.

Notes I:
The inscription could imply the following: 'A' could be an abbreviation for aqua or adeps (lard), 'CEPE' as plural for cepa (onion), 'ALB' for alba (white).

Notes II:
The new edition of Cesare Ripa's iconographic encyclopedia Iconoliga from 1593 was published in 1625, containing an article on the Fede Cattolica. The new edition was illustrated by Cavaliere d'Arpino. These illustrations seem to have served as a point of reference for the painted decoration of this bottle, the stylistic debt being particularly apparent in the rendering of the garment folds.
