Francesco Albotto,
1721/22 Venice – 1757 ibid., attributed
VENICE – VIEW OF THE DOGE’S PALACE WITH SAINT MARK’S SQUARE AND CAMPANILE Oil on canvas.
40 x 57 cm.

Francesco Albotto (also known as “Albotti” or “Francois Albotti”) was a student and employee of Marieschi and took over his master’s workshop after his death, which led to his nickname “The Second Marieschi” and his works were often considered to be those of his predecessor. It was not until 1972 that the two artists could be separated, when a signature was discovered. More recently, therefore, paintings by his hand can be attributed to him. In contrast to his predecessors, his painting style is much smoother making for a more exact representation. His works are held in private and public collections, including the Gemädegalerie in Berlin, the Museo e Gallerie Nazionali di Capodimonte in Naples, and the Gallerie di Palazzo Leoni Montanari in Vicenza etc.
