Der Komposition van Dycks folgend, wie sie in der Alten Pinakothek in München und in der Eremitage in Sankt Petersburg zu sehen ist bzw. eine Mischung beider Kompositionen darstellend, mit Josef, Maria und dem Kinde unter einem Baum in einer weiten Landschaft lagernd. Während die weite Landschaft des Bildes in der Eremitage weitestgehend übernommen wird, jedoch ohne die dazugehörigen Putti, verweisen Blicke und Gesten, wie die weisende Hand des Josef, auf das Gemälde in der Pinakothek in München. Wenn das Gemälde in der Werkstatt von van Dyck oder von ihm selbst gemalt wurde, so ist es in den 1630er Jahren entstanden.
Eine weitere, als authentisch angesehene Arbeit wird bei Susan J. Barnes, Van Dyck. A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, New Haven/ London, Yale University Press 2004, S. 397 unter III A1 aufgeführt (Galleria Palatina Palazzo Pitti Florenz).
