AR

WIDE LANDSCAPE WITH IMAGINATIVE DEPICTION OF THE TEMPLE OF SIBYL IN TIVOLI WITH FIGURE STAFFAGE

Oil on canvas.
136 x 74 cm.

The painting is in elongated landscape format. The focus of the depiction is an antique monopteron set in the mountain peaks in the background and a pastoral scene in the foreground. The artist's mastery is obvious in the nuancing of the light effects, the increasingly blurred outlines of the objects into the background, the evening clouds on the horizon glowing in a reddish light set in contrast with the dark shadows of the group of trees. The panoramic format of the landscape is arranged like a stage for the viewer. Apart from the painting's high quality typical for Locatelli, a lacquer seal on the reverse is relevant as it records that the painting was formerly part of an important royal estate. The seal bears an alliance coat of arms of the Royal House of Bourbon-Spain in combination with the House of Bourbon of Naples-Sicily surmounted by a crown. This is the period of Charles de Bourbon (1716 - 1788), also known as Charles III of Spain. He also held two further royal titles as Charles V of Sicily and as Charles VII of Naples. The alliance coat of arms of the seal shows the union of the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily as well as Spain in the coat of arms on the right. The wide landscape format of the painting and its former context are important as they suggest the painting's original position as an overdoor painting. It is also worth mentioning that Locatelli was commissioned by the architect Filippo Juvarra (1678 - 1736) to create various overdoor paintings, among others, for King Philipp V of Spain. The seal on the reverse makes a connection between Locatelli's painting on offer for sale in this lot and a Spanish commissioner evident.
