Beigegeben ein Zertifikat von Fanny Guillon-Laffaille vom 8. Januar 2014 (Nr. "P14-9035) in Kopie.

Rest. Doubliert. † (1100068) (10)

Raoul Dufy,

CALÈCHE À FALAISE [Carriage in Falaise], 1905

Oil on canvas.
78 x 64 cm.
Signed lower left.

Accompanied by a copy of the certificate by Fanny Guillon-Laffaille dated 8 January 2014 (no. "P14-9035).

A small carriage can be seen on a narrow path that has been cleared from the snow, running horizontally in parallel to the painting's lower edge. The carriage is painted between towering trees and almost blends into its surroundings bar its red wheels. The artist’s focus, however, lies on the bare trees. Dufy divides the painting's surface rhythmically by their naked structure and the branches add an element of dynamic. The scene is framed by two larger trees with the trunk on the right being cut off by the top and bottom margin of the picture and thus drawing the viewer to the painting. The trees appear like bars and make a hurrying passerby appear like a mere shadow in the landscape. Several scattered houses crouch behind the lines of trees in the snow. An adjoining wall runs almost in parallel to the horizontal path and counter balances the dominant vertical lines of the trees. The wall also combines the entire palette of the painting within itself and is a border between the foreground and the colourful trees in the background painted even more abstractly. Contrary to traditional presentation of spatiality the colourfulness increases with depth. The painter is using a reduced, quite dark palette in the foreground. The deeper the viewer immerses himself into the painting, the warmer the characteristic fauvist shades of ochre, sienna red and green become. Even the colouration of the tree trunks changes constantly from green to greyish blue, purple and auburn. The brushwork is graphic throughout. Dufy, who was deeply immersed in his Fauvism period at the time, shows his talent as a colourist with this warm and diverse fauvist palette. He would soon turn away from this artistic style and pursue a more graphic approach that would eventually become the characteristic feature of his Oeuvre. Rest. Relined. †
