Aus leicht erhöhter Perspektive bietet Renoir einen Blick über Küste, Stadt und Land. Dabei teilt er die Bildfläche in einzelne Zonen auf: den hellen Himmel, das weiße Band der Stadt, das blaue Meer und die beinahe vollkommen abstrakt erscheinende Baumgruppe im rechten Vordergrund. Wie für Renoir charakteristisch, verwendet der Künstler dabei meisterhaft und scheinbar mühelos in jeder der Zonen die komplette Palette der anderen, nur mit neuer Gewichtung, und erzeugt dadurch einen einzigartig harmonischen Gesamteindruck.
Renoirs kleinfromatige Küstenansicht steht dabei emblematisch für seine letzte Schaffensperiode, in der es der Künstler verstand, die mannigfaltigen Stadien seines Schaffens gekonnt zu vereinen. Zum Zeitpunkt, zu welchem das Gemälde enstand, war Renoir auf dem Höhepunkt seines Schaffens, wurde von Vollard und Durand-Ruel vertreten und stellte bereits in den USA aus. Die spontane Landschaftsdarstellung nimmt eine herausragende Position im Werk des Künstlers ein, wandte sich Renoir doch selten diesem Thema zu.

Renoir shows a view of the coast, town and landscape from a slightly elevated perspective. The scene is divided into individual areas: the light sky, the white band of the town, the blue sea and the almost entirely abstract group of trees in the foreground to the right. As is typical for Renoir the artist skilfully and seemingly effortlessly uses the complete colour palette of each area in the respective other area, just with a new emphasis and thus creates a unique harmonious overall impression. Renoir’s small format coastal view is emblematic of his late works when the artist was able to masterfully combine the diverse phases of his creative work. The painting offered for sale in this lot was created at this point, when Renoir was at the peak of his career and was represented by Vollard and Durand-Ruel and was also exhibiting in the USA. Spontaneous landscape depictions take a prominent position in the artist’s oeuvre as Renoir rarely depicted this topic.
