Der griechischen Sage nach war Polyphem ein einäugiger Riese, Sohn des Poseidon und der Meeresnymphe Thoosa. Geduldig aber ungeschlacht hatte er um die Nymphe geworben, die ihn verschmähte. In der Folge verliebte sich Galatea in den jungen Acis, der von Polyphem aus Eifersucht mit einem Felsblock zerschmettert wurde. Die Bilddarstellung mit einer leicht ruinösen Halle, zeigt den einäugigen Riesen rechts im Bild, vor ihm am Boden eine Panflöte, die nicht zuletzt auch ein Zeichen für seine Hinwendung zu Tanz und Gesang ist durch die Ablehnung Galateas. In den Wolken Amoretten und darunter Amor mit einem Pfeil, der auf Polyphem abzielt. (1091291)

According to Greek legend the Cyclops Polyphemus was the son of Poseidon and the sea nymph Thoosa. He had courted the nymph patiently but clumsily and was rejected. Subsequently Galatea fell in love with young Acis, who was killed with a boulder by the jealous Polyhemus. The clouds show amoretti with Amor shooting his arrow at Polyphemus.
