Salvator Rosa,

Salvator Rosa war ein großartiger Maler von Fantasielandschaften mit ganz besonderer Atmosphäre und Charakter. Mit seinen Spätwerken verhalf er einer besonderen poetischen Darstellungsart zu Anerkennung und Popularität, nämlich den erfundenen Landschaften. Hierin wurden dann biblische und mythologische Episoden dargestellt, die jedoch eigentlich nur Nebensache waren. Das vorliegende Gemälde, das vormals im Toledo Museum of Art zu sehen war, gehört ganz eindeutig zu dieser Untergruppe. Die drei Figuren auf der linken Bildseite erzählen die Geschichte von Hagar in der Wüste, die zusammen mit ihrem Sohn Ismael von Abraham vertrieben wurde. Fast dem Tode nahe begegnet ihr ein Engel, der ihr eine Wasserquelle zeigt (Genesis, 22, 1-9).
Das Werk weist viele, für die Zeit zwischen 1655 und 1670 typische Stilmerkmale von Salvator Rosa auf, besonders die großen, zerklüfteten Felsen auf der rechten Seite mit ihren Bögen und Höhlen, der knorrige Baum in der Bildmitte und der Hintergrund mit den Ruinen und Gebirgen. Man kann das Gemälde gut mit anderen Werken Salvator Rosas vergleichen, da sie analoge Bildaufteilungen, ähnliche Erzählstrukturen und ähnlich imposante, ausdrucksstarke Landschaften aufweisen, die fast schon „prä-romantische“ Anklänge besitzen: „Paesaggio con Mercurio e Agro“ (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne), „Paesaggio con soldati“ (Art Gallery, Southampton), „Mercurio e il boscaiolo disonesto“ (National Gallery, London) und „Paesaggio con Tobia e l'angelo“ (zwei Versionen, Musée des Beaux Arts, Straßburg und National Gallery, London). Unser Gemälde dürfte um 1660 entstanden sein.

LANDSCAPE WITH HAGAR AND THE ANGEL

Salvator Rosa was a magnificent painter of fantastical landscapes with special atmosphere and character. In his late works he helped to establish recognition and popularity for a very special poetic landscape depiction, namely the “imaginary landscape”. Biblical and mythological episodes were part of these landscapes, but merely as an accessory.
The present painting, which was formerly exhibited at the Toledo Museum of Art is clearly part of this subcategory. It shows many stylistic features of Salvator Rosa typical of the period ca. 1655 - 1670: especially the large, jagged rocks on the right with its arches and caves, the gnarled tree at the centre and the background with ruins and mountain ranges. The painting can be readily compared with other works by Salvator Rosa: “Paesaggio con Mercurio e Agro” (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne), “Paesaggio con soldati” (Art Gallery, Southampton), “Mercurio e il boscaiolo disonesto” (National Gallery, London) und “Paesaggio con Tobia e l’angelo” (two versions, Musée des Beaux Arts, Strasbourg and National Gallery, London). Our painting was probably created in ca. 1660.
