Kleine Knickspuren. (1031821) (12)

VENUS AND MARS, BOTTICELLI

Ink on photography.
71 x 178 cm.
Artist signet and monogram lower right.
Framed with glass.

The Belgian artist Jean-Luc Moerman became famous for his tattoo drawings incorporating modern and Classical art icons. He thereby melds influences of underground cultures such as tattoo, graffiti, rock and hip hop with the symbolic meaning of the tattoo technique already known to early primitive cultures. These fascinating black-and-white shapes then appear on the bodies and faces of the replicated figures. The basis for the present landscape-format painting is Sandro Botticelli's Mars and Venus, which was created ca. 1485 and is today held at the National Gallery in London. Not only Mars and Venus, but also the small satyrs gathered around them bear a set of tattoos. Only the areas up to the neck, and not covered by clothing or fur, have been painted. Minor creasing.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
