Oben rundbogenhaft abgeschlossene, hochrechteckige Bildtafel mit halbfiguriger, nach rechts gewandter Darstellung des weinenden Heraklit, seine Hand nach links vorn ausstreckend. Schon in der Handhaltung liegt, im Gegensatz zu der des Demokrit, welcher im Folgelos angeboten wird, etwas Schwerfälliges, ja Negatives inne.

Joseph Friedrich Engelschall, Johann Heinrich Tischbein - ehemaliger Fürstlich Hessischer Rath und Hofmaler als Mensch und Künstler, Nürnberg 1797. Darin auf S. 108 unter Nummer 93 vermerkt der lachende Demokrit und unter Nummer 94 der weinende Heraklit, jedoch mit der Bemerkung, sie seien 1783 gemalt. Von der Hand des Künstlers seien zwei eigenhändige Kopien existent, damals im Besitz des Landrats von Meyenbug zu Riede. (1230237) (13)

Signed, place named, and dated “H. Tischbein pinx. Cassel, 1777” at centre left.
In richly carved open-work and gilt frame with trellis décor.

Rectangular portrait-format panel painting with round arch at the top. Heraclitus is depicted weeping, turned to the right stretching his hand out to the front left. The position of the hand is somehow cumbersome and negative in contrast with the one of Democritus offered in the previous lot.

Joseph Friedrich Engelschall, Johann Heinrich Tischbein ehemaliger Fürstlich Hessischer Rath und Hofmaler als Mensch und Künstler, Nuremberg, 1797. See p. 108 no. 93 for the laughing Democritus and no. 94 for the crying Heraclitus, with the note that they were painted in 1783. There are supposed to be two copies by the artists own hand which were then owned by the head of the district authority of Meyenbug zu Riede.
