PAIR OF MUSICIANS

Oil on canvas.
94.5 x 135 cm.

Pietro Paolini enjoyed his training in the workshop of Angelo Caroselli, a painter influenced by Caravaggio. Paolini too was influenced by Caravaggio, but also by his followers and he thus painted those everyday events, which the great Lombardic artist Caravaggio had popularized in Roman painting between the 16th and 17th century. The following characteristics are typical for Paolini’s developed technique (which was based on Caravaggio): the balanced, simple proportioning of the painting, the figure’s plasticity, the mysterious vague facial expression, the smooth, luminous complexion of the boy in contrast to the girl in the shadows as well as the precision with which the artist depicts the musical instruments. All these characteristics can also be found in other works by Paolini.
