Obgleich Francesco Guardi für seine Ansichten Venedigs, gemalt en plein air, nach Gemälden oder Stichen anderer Künstler oder frei nach der Fantasie bekannt war, betätigte er sich auch in anderen Genres, die das einfache, alltägliche Leben in Venedig zeigen, in Stilleben mit Blumen, Portraits, Landschaften und Capricci. In letzterem Genre erreichte er wohl in seinem reichen Oeuvre die größten Güte, die ihm eine grundlegende Rolle in der Entwicklung jener Gattung in der Malerei des 18. Jahrhunderts zuwies. Guardi malte architektonische Capricci, Landschaften und erfundene Ansichten, Marine- und wie auf dem vorliegenden Gemälde Küstenszenen, die durch kleine Figuren belebt werden. Das vorliegenden Gemälde ist in der für Guardi charakteristischen Technik mit flottem, flüssigem Pinselduktus ausgeführt, mit dem er in wenigen, markanten Strichen Profile, Silhouetten und Landschaftshintergründe umriss. Der Fokus liegt auf den beinahe in Ruinen liegenden Gebäuden, mit zum Trocknen aufgehängter Wäsche und ärmlichen, hölzernen Dächern, den gerade noch sichtbaren Segeln am Horizont, den Figuren in Rückenansicht im Vordergrund sowie dem hellen, wolkigen Himmel und den silbrigen Schatten im Hintergrund. Zahlreiche andere Gemälde können zum Vergleich herangezogen werden wie die Capricci, die Guardi in den 1760er und 1780er Jahren ausführte. Eine ähnliche Präsentation rustikaler Gebäude an der See weisen jeweils ein Gemälde in venezianischem Privatbesitz (abgebildet in A. Bettagno, Francesco Guardi. Vedute Capricci Feste, Venedig, 1993, S. 154f, Nr. 53), in der Sammlung des Duke Montellano in Madrid (ebenda, S. 156f, Nr. 54) und im Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona (ebenda, S. 162f, Nr. 57) auf. A painting in a Venetian private collection shows a similar presentation of rustic buildings by the sea (illustrated in A. Bettagno, Francesco Guardi. Views capricci celebrations, Venice, 1993, pp. 154, no. 53), another in the collection of the Duke Montellano in Madrid (as above, pp. 156, no. 54) and another in the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona (as above, pp. 162, no. 57).
