UNTITLED, 1997

Tempera and quartz sand on panel, mounted in artist‘s copper frame.
41.3 x 31.1 cm.
Signed and dated on the reverse of the frame.

Mimmo Paladino is - aside from Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Sando Chia - one of the most important exponents of the Italian Transavanguardia. In the 1970's, Paladino's oeuvre was based on Christian and antique mythological topics. Skulls, skeletons, and animals accompagnied by geometric elements are the symbols used in his mysterious imagery. Paladino intensively studied wallpainting and the frescoe technique, which inspired him to use various materials and radiant pigments, creating expressive colour effects. The composition of the represented painting is based on a triad: a brilliant ultramarine and two tones of ocre, which get intensified through the dark background. Three-dimensional effects are created through a thick impasto application of paint. Paladino is also working as a sculptor and realized many art projects in public space. Since the end of the 1970's the artist's work was represented at many international exhibitions, e.g. the Venice Biennale (1980), at the documenta 7 or the Sydney Biennale (1982). A comprehensive retrospective was shown at the Lenbachhaus, Munich in 1999. His works are held by renowned collections such as the Tate Gallery, London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the MoMA, New York.
