Für die Komposition hat sich der Künstler bekannter antiker, römischer Bauwerke bedient, die er - wie bereits Estella Brunetti 1964 bemerkt hat - in äußerst harmonischer Weise auf der Leinwand komponiert hat. Eingeleitet durch eine große, reliefierte Vase führt links eine Fassade mit vorgelagerten Säulen in die Tiefe. Sie ist in meisterlicher Verkürzung wiedergegeben und dirigiert den Blick zum Titusbogen im Hintergrund. Die rechte äußere Bildseite dominiert ein das gesamte Bildformat hochragender Obelisk, hinter dem die Ruine des Kolosseums zu sehen ist. Ihr schließen sich in der Ferne eine Ruinenapsis sowie zwei wohl nach der Natur gemalte Gebäude an, die auch wieder auf dem zehn Jahre später entstandenen "Titusbogen", heute im Michele & Donald D`Amour Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, auftauchen. Als Gegengewicht zum Obelisken ragt ein Baum links in das Bildfeld, wodurch die harmonische Wirkung und Ausgewogenheit der Komposition zusätzlich gesteigert wird. Den bühnenartigen Vorder-, Mittel- und Hintergrund beleben einige Staffagefiguren. Bei diesen sind besonders die junge Mutter, die im linken Vordergrund ein Kind an der Hand führt, zu erwähnen. Diese kleine, innige Gruppe taucht zu jener Zeit in leichter Variation auch auf anderen Gemälden auf, wie rechts auf der "Parabola del Pesce" in Kansas City. Zudem kann der sich an den Obelisken lehnende Mann auf eine Figurenstudie zurückgeführt werden, die sich im Berliner Kupferstichkabinett befindet.
