Der Maler war Schüler von Luca Giordano, nahm aber auch Einflüsse von Veronese auf. Er stand in Kontakt mit Massimo Stanzione. Noch vor 1683 unternahm er mehrere Reisen, arbeitet dabei in Süditalien und Rom, wo er sich von Marattas Wer­ken beeinflussen lässt. Seine Entwicklung hin zum Stil des Barocks, wie wir ihn von Amigone kennen, ließ ihn zu einem Gegenspieler Solimenas werden. 1683 zog er nach Neapel, wo er bis 1697 wirkte und Fresken für die Kirchen Santa Maria degli Angeli und San Fernando schuf. Von 1702 bis 1705 war de Matteis Hofmaler in Paris und über­nahm dort den eleganten und verfeinerten Stil der französischen Malerei. Zurück in Neapel, nach den spanischen Erbfolgekriegen unter Habsburger Herrschaft, wurde er von Aufträgen überhäuft. Seine Malerei wurde mehr und mehr von einem akademischen Geist erfüllt, wie wir in dem Gemälde "Herkules auf dem Scheideweg" von 1712, im Ash­molean Museum, Oxford, sehen können.

In einem dem Gemäldethema entsprechenden Rahmen in Form von Schilfblättern und -kolben.

Galatea in einem von Tauben gezogenen Muschelwagen in Begleitung von Nixen, Nereiden und einem Amorknaben über den Ozean fahrend.

Expertise:
Dem Gemälde beigegeben ist eine Expertise von Prof. Ugo Ruggieri, Venedig, der das Bild in die Zeit um 1710 einordnet, mit Stilvergleich und Hinweis auf die Gemälde "Aurora im Sonnenwagen" sowie "Triumph der Galatea" (Schloss Pommersfelden).
