Rechts unten signiert und datiert "IP. Panini/1736". Verso auf dem Keil- und Außenrahmen Galerieaufkleber der Londoner Walpole Gallery mit Stempel und handschriftlicher Titelbezeichnung.

Das Ruinencapricco fügt - wie in der Zeit üblich - mehrere antike Bauwerke in ein Gesamtbild zusammen. So beherrscht das Zentrum des Bildes ein ägyptischer Obelisk, den der Maler in Rom als Vorbild etwa auf dem Petersplatz antreffen konnte, dahinter die Ruinen der Konstantins-Basilika, rechts der Tempel der Fortuna Virile, links eine weitere Tempelfront mit korinthischen Rundsäulen. Zwischen Tempel und Obelisk ist im fernen Hintergrund das Kolosseum im helleren Licht zu erkennen. Im Vordergrund hat der Künstler mehrere Personen zwischen Architekturtrümmern dargestellt, im Gespräch über die Architektur der Vergangenheit, wie dies im 18. Jahrhundert Thema war. Am rechten Bildrand ein Porphyrsarkophag mit detailliert wiedergegebenem Relief, davor Kapitelle und Gesimsstücke. Das Gemälde von hoher Qualität, die den Hauptwerken des genannten Malers entspricht.
