B. Strozzi, Ridolfi, Altoviti, Soderini, Guicciardini, Salviati). (9300052)

Maiolica armorial dish
Diameter: 23.5 cm.
Faenza, 16th century.

Shallow dish with broad border. The border painted with grotesques and arabesques in berettino style. The centre enclosed by a bead and reel band, depicts a crowned coat of arms with a blue lion on a red ground. The arms have not been identified conclusively, but point to the Bellandi family for the combination of red on a yellow ground or to the Bette & Betti (del Leon Nero) family in silver on blue ground. The arms by the Alessandrini family show a gold lion with a crown on a blue ground. Good condition, repaired.

Notes:
the combination of berettino decoration and arms or a scene at the centre was very popular among the influential Florentine families in the 1520s and 1530s (for example: Strozzi, Ridolfi, Altoviti, Soderini, Guicciardini, Salviati).
