Large maiolica Istoriato dish from the Fontana workshop
Diameter: 47 cm.
Urbino, 16th century.

Large shallow Istoriato dish with a narrow border. The border painted with small putti, foliage masks and grotesques on a white ground. Some of the putti are gods, for example Bacchus; draperies, vases and festoons elaborately unify the composition. The interior wall is decorated with a blue floral wreath with fruits and ribbons. The centre depicts the mythological scene of The Abduction of Helen. In the foreground, cut off by the rim, two ships are just visible, crowded with men ready to depart. Behind them, the beautiful, blonde Helen is being abducted by a virile Paris she raises her arms pleading for help. The middle ground depicts the walls and fortifications of an oriental-looking city. Painted in blue, yellow, orange, red, green, manganese and black. Cracked and restored with subtle associated overpainting at the front.

Notes:
The literary source for this scene is the Odyssey by Homer. Helen is the wife of Menelaos, King of Sparta and is regarded as the most beautiful woman on earth. Venus promises that she would fall in love with Paris, if he votes for her being the most beautiful goddess, which he does. Venus leads Paris to Helen, he abducts her thereby triggering the Trojan War.

Literature:
For a depiction of Helen in the same posture, also from Urbino, see catalogue Maioliche del Museo Civico di Pesaro, Bologna, 1979, no. 272.
