Majolika-Wappenteller aus Gubbio

Im Spiegelzentrum Wappen mit zwei Löwen, flankiert von bekrönten "AE"-Initialen und Adler. Breiter Rand des Tellers mit Grotesken und Cherubin-Kopf auf blauem Grund. Malerei in Blau und Rot, allseitig prächtiges Dekor in Rot- und Gold-Lüster. Einige wenige Chips an Rand und Fuß, Ränder und Oberfläche etwas berieben.

Anmerkung:
Die Initialen könnten auf Alfonso d'Este (1476 - 1534), den Herzog von Ferrara und Modena, hinweisen. Der Teller wird in der Zeit des Todes von Lucrezia Borgia (1480 - 1519), der zweiten Frau Alfonsos, entstanden sein. Das Wappen der d'Este ziert ein silberner Adler auf blauem Grund, diese Farbigkeit ist hier umgedreht. Das zentrale Wappen lässt an die Familie Leoncilli denken, die in Spoleta beheimatet waren, obwohl es doch sehr abweicht. An Stelle eines silbernen Bandes auf blauem Grund zeigt der Teller ein goldenes Band auf rotem Grund.

Maiolica armorial Istoriato dish from Gubbio
Diameter: 21.7 cm.

Centre of the dish embellished with a crest with two lions, flanked by the crowned intials 'AE' and an eagle. The dish's wide border is decorated with painted grotesques and a cherubim head on a blue ground. Painted in blue and red, with rich ornamentation on all sides in red and gold lustre. A few chips on the rim and base; slight paint wear to the rims and surface.

Notes:
The initials could point to Alfonso d'Éste (1476 - 1534), Duke of Ferrara and Modena. The dish appears to have been made around the time of the death of Lucrezia Borgia (1480 - 1519), Alfonso's second wife. The colour scheme here reverses that of the crest of the d'Éste Family, which bears a silver eagle against a blue ground. The central crest emblem resembles that of the Leoncilli family, which resided in Spoleto, except with some major differences: instead of a silver ribbon on blue ground, the plate is decorated with a gold ribbon on red ground.
