Pair of terracotta “fat ladies”
Height: 36.5 cm.
China, Tang Dynasty, early 8th century.

The two elegant ladies stand on a base plate. Their arms are raised in front of their chests, their heads tilted to the side. Dressed in voluminous robes, which cover their entire bodies from shoulders to ground, their hands tucked under the sleeves. Underneath their robes, their pointed shoes are visible. Their stylised helmet-shaped hair reaches down to the nape with a wave over their foreheads. One lady’s garment is glazed yellow at the top and blue at the bottom, the other in reverse. The faces show remains of the original painting.

Notes:
A thermoluminescence analysis by Oxford Authentication Ltd from 1999 is enclosed with the figures. Literature: for similar figures, see Foreign Language Press, Historical Relics Unearthed in New China, Peking, 1972, pp. 146ff.
