Große Istoriato-Prachtplatte mit einer Darstellung des Horatius Cocles auf seinem Schimmel über die Brücke reitend. Gemäß der römischen Mythologie soll er im Jahre 507 v. Chr. die nach Rom führende Brücke über den Tiber gegen die Etrusker verteidigt haben. Währenddesssen rissen die Römer die Brücke hinter ihm ab und Cocles schwamm mit Hilfe der Götter in voller Rüstung sicher nach Rom. Vielfigurige Darstellung der Szene. Im Hintergrund tiefe Landschaft, Wald und Architektur. Auf der Rückseite die Beschriftung "Horatio sul ponte". Bruchrestaurierungen. (881985)

A large istoriato plate for display with a scene of Horatius Cocles on his white horse, riding over a bridge. According to Roman mythology, in 507 B.C. he allegedly defended the bridge leading to Rome above the Tiber river against the Etruscans. Meanwhile the Romans destroyed the bridge behind him and Cocles swam to safety back to Rome with the help of the Gods in full panoply. The scene depicts many figures. In the background is a deep landscape, the forest, and architectural elements.
