Der Maler war Sohn des Cornelis Engelsz aus Gouda, der ihn in der Portraitmalerei unterrichtete, möglicherweise war er auch Schüler von Frans Hals. Sein Oeuvre beschränkt sich hauptsächlich auf das Portraitfach. Die ins sanfte Grau ziehende Farbigkeit ist typisch für seine Malweise.

Lebensgroßes Brustbild nach links, die Frau in schwarzem, gestreiftem Seidenkleid, mit reicher Goldbrokatstickerei am Mieder sowie elegantem, ebenso reich gearbeitetem Spitzenkragen, die Einfassung des glatt nach hinten gekämmten Haares ebenso von Spitze gerahmt, der Blick gilt dem Betrachter. Das Portrait in feintoniger Farbigkeit vor grün-grauem Hintergrund.
