Der Dargestellte im Halbbildnis, mit energischen Zügen. In der rechten Hand hält er einige beschriebene Papierbögen, darauf zu lesen „ANASIMANDRO". Der griechische Philosoph Anaximander bzw. Aximandros, geb. um 610 v. Chr. in Milet - nach 547 v. Chr., gehörte neben Thales und Anaximenes zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der ionischen Aufklärung und der milesischen Naturphilosophie. Am oberen Bildrand wohl leicht erg., sonst in tadelloser Erhaltung.
Anmerkung:
Das Gemälde gehörte wohl ursprünglich zu einer Reihe von Philosophendarstellungen, die der Maler wohl in der zweiten Hälfte seiner Wirkungszeit schuf. Ein stilistisch nahestehendes Gemälde „Diogenes" wurde bei Hampel Kunstauktionen am 30.6.2006 als Katalognr. 334 verauktioniert.
