Der belgische Künstler studierte an der Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brüssel, wo er unter anderem James Ensor (1860-1949) und Fernand Khnopff (1858-1921) kennenlernte. Hier sehen wir den Place de la Bourse in Brüssel mit dem namensgebenden Gebäude im Hintergrund, das mächtig über das sich davor abspielende Geschehen herrscht und sich doch im dunstigen Licht vornehm vor den sich scharf abzeichnenden Fahrzeugen, Figuren und Gebäuden ausnimmt. Das Gebäude von 1873 wurde anstelle des früheren Marché au Beurre gebaut, welcher selbst anstelle eines Klosters aus dem 13. Jahrhunderts errichtet worden war. (1401488) (13)
