Als Utrillo 1904 genesen musste, zog er sich nach Montmagny zurück, wo er auf Anraten seines Psychiaters anfing, Stadtlandschaften zu malen – so spielt die Stadt, von der Utrillo hier eine Ansicht wählte, in seiner Schaffensgeschichte eine nicht unerhebliche Rolle. Wie häufig im Schaffen Utrillos nutzt er auch hier eine Straße, eine Allee, eine Mauer, um Räumlichkeit zu erzeugen und perspektivisch in das Gemälde hineinzuleiten, welches von wenigen Staffagefiguren bevölkert wird, die Utrillo helfen, den perspektivisch gestalteten Raum näher zu definieren. Der Blick führt zwischen den Bäumen hindurch auf die Kirche Saint Thomas. (†)
