Important Louis XIV sculpture of Cupid

Lead; cast and gilt.
Height: 112 cm.
France, beginning of the 18th century, ca. 1704-05.

Note:
In his painting titled Vue du bosquet des Bains d’Apollon dans les jardins de Versailles en 1713 (see image for comparison) the artist Pierre-Denis Martin (1663-1742, also known as Martin the Younger) depicts a scene, commissioned by Louis XIV for the Salon des Sources Au Grand Trianon 1713 (Versailles, Châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon (MV759)). The figure of Cupid depicted on the central canopy is probably the Cupid sculpture on offer for sale in this lot. This canopy and fountain composition with the “Bains d’Apollon” was created under the supervision of Jules Hardouin-Mansart (1646-1708). The three sculptural groups were intended for the Thetys Grotto, commissioned in
1666 and removed again in 1684 in the course of the building of the north wing at Versailles. They were exhibited at the Bosquet de la Renommée in 1704. In order to protect the sculptures from the weather, iron canopies were erected and the central canopy was surmounted by the Cupid on offer for sale here.
