Der 1523 in Brügge geborene Künstler war Schüler von Pieter Aertsen und seit 1645 in der St. Lukas Gilde in Antwerpen eingeschrieben. 1550 zog es ihn nach Rom und drei Jahre später zog er nach Florenz, wo er bis zu seinem Tode 1605 wirkte. 
Als Vorbild für die vorliegende schöne Allegorie gilt eine gleiche Komposition, welche beim RKD in Den Haag unter Nummer 117498 geführt wird und im Seattle Art Museum verwahrt wird. Das vorliegende Gemälde ist beim RKD in Den Haag ebenfalls registriert (Nr. 253459) und wird als vermutlich nach Jan van der Straet (Johannes Stradanus) geführt.

Anmerkung:
Gut vergleichbar ist auch eine Allegorie der Eitelkeit von 1569, welche im Louvre in Paris verwahrt wird (117 x 101 cm).

Inscribed on the bottom of the base „JOHA./ STRADANES“.

A paragon for the present beautiful allegory is a painting with the same composition listed at the RKD in The Hague, no. 117498 and held at the Seattle Art Museum. The painting on offer for sale here is also listed at the RKD in The Hague (no. 253459) and is listed as probably by Jan van der Straet (Johannes Stradanus).

This painting compares well to an Allegory of Vanity dated 1569, held at the Louvre in Paris (117 x 101 cm).
