RECLINING VENUS Oil on canvas.
91 x 126 cm.

This is a popular subject of nude painting as the depiction of a goddess justifies her nudity. Only few works by this artist are known: he was born in Fossombrone near Pesaro and spent the first years of his life in Rome and Bologna before relocating to Venice in 1650 to study with Guido Cagnacci and Pietro Liberi. Other known works by him are “The Glorificazione del Podestà Nicola Balbi” at the Chiesa della Rotonda in Rovigo, created in 1680 and also mythological depictions such as “Hercules in front of Jupiter” or “Venus and Adonis” (see lit.). Another example is the painting Mercury and Argus (Palazzo Gritti Badoer, Venice). The influence of the Venetian School is also obvious in the depiction of Venus in the painting on offer for sale in this lot and suggests a period of creation of the 1660s/70s.
