Auch wenn der dargestellte Ort nicht eindeutig als La Rochelle identifiziert werden kann, liegt doch die Vermutung nahe, dass es dieser Ort ist, welchen Corot in den 1850er-Jahren häufig darstellte. Corot lag die Natur und so stellte er auch Städte nicht als Vedute dar, sondern – wie in diesem Fall – als Staffage innerhalb einer von der Natur gekennzeichneten Landschaft, welche sich auch farblich kaum von dem felsigen Vordergrund abhebt. Direkt wird die Aufmerksamkeit des Betrachters jedoch auf den Fischer mit seiner roten Kopfbedeckung gelenkt, welcher im Oeuvre Corots ungefähr 40 Mal erscheint und durch seine reine Farbwirkung die Tonalität der restlichen Darstellung gleichsam bestätigt.
