Beigegeben in Kopie eine ausführliche Expertise von Paolo Vanoli ohne Datum. Im Vergleich mit gesicherten Werken Crespis, kommt Vanoli zweifelsohne zur Zuschreibung an Giovanni Battista Crespi und dessen Werkstatt; eine Zusammenarbeit mit Melchiorre Gherardini (1607-1675) schließt er nicht aus.

Fast quadratische Darstellung nach apokryphen Berichten, etwa aus der Legenda Aurea. Die Darstellung geht formal auf Vorbilder von Raffael (Pinacoteca di Brera) und Perugino zurück. Von dem Hochformat mit obigem rundem Abschluss (auch Gherardinis Bild in Mailand folgt diesem Format) entwickelte sich das vorliegende Format. Dargestellt sind mittig ein Priester mit ihn flankierenden Maria und Joseph, erkenntlich an seinem blühenden Stab. Links neben Maria eine ältere Frau, welche wohl als Heilige Anna identifiziert werden kann. Desweiteren sind drei weitere Personen zu sehen, eine mit vergoldetem Silbergeschirr. Als Sohn eines Malers war Giovanni Battista Crespi Kopf der Werkstatt, in welcher mehrere Angehörige seiner Familie tätig waren. Sein Bruder Ortensio (um 1578-um 1631) und seine Schwester Giulia etwa.

Provenienz:
Wichtige lombardische Sammlung laut Vanoli.

Anmerkung:
Als Vergleichsbeispiele können geltend gemacht werden „Die Vermählung der Jungfrau“von il Cerano und Melchiorre Gherardini in der Kirche San Giuseppe in Mailand. Hier scheint vor allem die vermittelnde Person zwischen Maria und Joseph interessant zu sein, dessen Blick spiegelverkehrt zu unserem gerichtet ist und dessen eine Hand zum Segensgestus erhoben ist, statt wie bei dem vorliegenden Gemälde auf die Schulter des Joseph gelegt ist. Interessant ist auch ein Blick auf Gherardinis Fresken im Sacro Monte di Varallo, auf denen ein Jünglingskopf zu finden ist, ähnlich zu dem am rechten Rand des vorliegenden Gemäldes.

Almost square depiction of apocryphal reports such as the Legenda Aurea. Formally the depiction can be traced back to paragons by Raphael (Pinacoteca di Brera) and Perugino.

According to Vanoli important collection in Lombardy.

Notes:
Similar examples can be considered “The Marriage of the Virgin” by Cerano and M. Gherardini at the Church of San Giuseppe in Milan.
