Bedeutender Maler des lombardischen Manierismus, der seine Lehre bei Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (1608 /09- 1661/65) begann und von Giovanni Battista Crespi il Cerano (1575-1633) und Giulio Cesare Procaccini (1574-1625) beeinflusst wurde. Zu seinen Schülern zählen Pietro Maggi (1680-1738), Giuseppe Rivola (gest. 1740) und Alessandro Magnasco (um 1667-1749). In seinen späteren Werken wurde er Vorläufer des italienischen Rokoko im Kreis von Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734) und Federico Bencovich (1677-1753).DER BARMHERZIGE SAMARITER Öl auf Leinwand.

Die biblische Szene des Neuen Testaments, nach der ein Samaritaner entgegen den pharisäischen Vorschriften einen Verwundeten pflegt, ist in betontem Chiaroscuro-Stil wiedergegeben. Der Hauptakzent der Beleuchtung gilt dem nach links liegenden Verwundeten mit geöffnetem Mantel, der den Oberkörper frei legt und eine Wunde zeigt. Der Samaritaner etwas höher stehend, mit rotem Kopftuch und Bart, greift nach einem Salböl, das ein Diener herbeigebracht hat. Links hinten zwei wegziehende Personen, deren Kopfbedeckung als signifikant für die Gruppe der Pharisäer gilt. Die betont gedrehte Haltung des Leidenden kann hier als typisches Merkmal des Manierismus gesehen werden. (11607412) (11)
