82 x 46 cm.
Sieneser Schule des beginnenden 15. Jahrhunderts.
PORTRAIT OF SAINT BERNARD
Tempera on panel.
82 x 46 cm.
Sienese School of the early 15th century.
Greater part of an altarpiece, with the top shaped like a pointed arch and the right third of the painting missing. The saint is depicted in white habit against a black background with his head surrounded by a chased nimbus. He is holding the epiphany of a radiant gloriole inscribed "YHS" in Gothic minuscule with two fingers of his outstretched right hand. In his left, he is holding an open book in Roman majuscules inscribed "MAN/ IFES/ TAVI/ NOME/ N.../ TU... M... RA... HO...", a quote from the Gospel of Saint John: "manifestavi nomen tuum hominibus quos dedisti mihi [...]" [I have manifested thy name unto the men which though gavest me (.)]. The altarpiece is in good condition, except for the missing part.
