(1120922) (12)

SAINT PAUL PREACHING IN ANTIQUE RUINS

Oil on canvas. Relined.
99 x 136 cm.

Accompanied by an expert's report by Giuliano Briganti dated 28 May 1990.

The depiction is based on a story in the Book of Acts 28. The present, magnificent painting shows Saint Paul throwing the adder in the fire in in a ruinous architecture setting, as is typical for paintings by the great Italian master Pannini. The surrounding figures are shocked and impressed. In a playful manner, these figures almost constitute a compositional echo of the surrounding architecture. Both the positioning of the columns and the figures are headed for Saint Paul. It is those cleverly designed devices that demonstrate Panini's great mastery.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
