Vom Fuße des Hügels von Montmartre aus gesehen zeigt der bedeutende französische Künstler eine heute nicht mehr vorhandene Ansicht eines damals noch recht ärmlichen Pariser Stadteils, dem Maquis in Montmartre. Die steil aufsteigende Straße links erhält ihre Dynamik durch die starke Verkürzung der Palisaden und Häuserfronten am linken Bildrand. Sie führt den Blick direkt zu den beiden Wahrzeichen des Montmartre: Sacre Coeur und Moulin de la Galette. Diese zeichnen sich deutlich vor dem grauen Himmelsband ab. Utrillo beschäftigte sich zahlreiche Male mit diesem legendären, heute nicht mehr existierenden Ort und gab ihn zu allen Tages- und Jahreszeiten wieder. Dass sich das Viertel schon damals im Umbruch befand, bezeugen die Figuren. Neben einem bescheidenen, auf Stelzen stehenden Holzhaus steht eine sehr einfach gekleidete Frau, deren Schürze in wenigen Pinselstrichen angedeutet ist. Rechts vorne dagegen sind zwei elegantere Damen mit Hüten wiedergegeben, die die spätere Prägung des Viertels spiegeln.

Seen from the bottom of the Montmartre hill this important French artist shows a view of this previously quite poor area of Paris that no longer exists and is today known as the Marquis of Montmartre. The steep road on the left is dynamic due to the pronounced foreshortening of the palisades and fronts of the houses towards the left picture margin. It directs the view directly to the two landmarks of Montmartre: the Sacré Coeur and the Moulin de la Galette. These monuments distinctly stand out against the grey sky. Utrillo repeatedly painted this legendary and today no longer present place at all times of the day and in all seasons. The figures painted in the scene attest to this district’s imminent gentrification: a woman, plainly dressed in a pinafore painted just with a few brushstrokes is standing next to a humble wooden house on stilts while two elegant ladies with hats are shown in the front right.
