† (1100064) (10)

Albert Marquet,

"ROUTE DU BORD DE SEINE A AL FRETTE", 1940

Oil on canvas.
60 x 73 cm.
Signed lower right.

The work offered for sale in this lot is listed with the Wildenstein Institute, reference no. "10.09.23/11213/2601". Accompanied by a copy of a certificate of authenticity by the Wildenstein Institute dated 13 September 2010.

The painting depicts the scenery of the River Seine after a shower. The rain-soaked streets reflect an overcast sky and shadows of lush green trees. These reflections are repeated in the water surface of the broad River Seine, only interrupted by the loud and non-reflecting grass along the embankment that is juxtaposed in an appealing contrast to these mirroring areas. Marquet has masterfully arranged white, almost dazzling light reflexes as is typical after a heavy shower. This French landscape artist exhibited at the “Fauves” exhibition in 1905 together with his friends Henri Matisse and André Derain. His central subject is the relation between colour and light and how light influences colour. In 1939 he permanently settled in La Frette by the River Seine and the present painting was created in this final creative period. †
