Bedeutendes kunsthandwerkliches Objekt. (10702450) (11)

Large gilt-bronze lapis lazuli and rock crystal cross with ivory Corpus Christi
Height of cross: 127 cm.
Width: 93 cm.
Height of ivory sculpture: 65 cm.
19th century.

Important artisan object. Board-shaped lapis lazuli crucifix beams set in a smooth gilt-bronze frame, the crucifix terminals decorated with protruding open-work foliage ornaments also in gilt-bronze. Four semi-circular rock crystal discs inserted into each corner accentuate the beams’ point of intersection and create the effect of a gloriole around Christ’s head. The discs applied with nearly three-dimensional winged angels’ heads in gilt-bronze. The body of Christ is carved in ivory in a three-nail type, the head is lowered to the left, his eyes and mouth are open and his gaze faces upwards. Christ wears a broad and imposing filigree thorn crown with fine undercutting. His hair, beard and loincloth held in place by a cord are equally finely crafted.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
