HEN HOUSE WITH POULTRY

Oil on canvas.
98 x 117 cm.

The reverse of the canvas shows a label with an inventory number the name of the artist and “Bigelow Collection” to which the painting formerly belonged.

Accompanied by a diagnostic analysis of the offered lot and a restorer's report confirming the good overall condition and compatibility of the materials used. The painting was probably painted in the second half of the 17th century.
This lively depiction is typical for the style of Melchior de Hondecoeter and his workshops. With its luminous colours and vibrant contrasts the painting on offer in this lot also shows Hondecoeter's interest in the works of Jan Baptist Weenix and Frans Snyders. The present painting easily compares with many other pictures by Melchior de Hondecoeter, but especially with Birds in a Park (Rijksmuseum Amsterdam); Birds and Spaniel in a Garden (Royal Collection, Buckingham Palace, London) and A Park with Poultry (The State Hermitage, Saint Petersburg).

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
