Carlo Lodi,
1701 Bologna – 1765

A pair of paintings
RIVERSCAPES WITH FIGURES

Oil on canvas.
92 x 127 cm each.

Accompanied by an expert's report by Professor Giancarlo Sestieri.

These two fantasy landscapes featuring rivers, ruins and resting figures are unmistakably in the style of Carlo Lodi, one of the most brilliant “Capriccio architettonico“ (Architectural cappricio) painters of 18th century Emilia-Romagna, alongside the Bibbiena dynasty, Paolo Paltronieri (also known as “il Mirandolese“) and Vittorio Maria Bigari. Lodi skilfully combined traditional Seicento landscape painting with the styles of Jan Frans van Bloemen, Pieter Mulier (also known as „il Tempesta“) and, above all, Marco Ricci as is illustrated by the offered paintings. They are probably late works since the delicately-rendered figures evoke the gallantry of Boucher,

and were probably painted by Lodi's excellent student Nicola Bertuzzi. Both compositions play on the tension between the impressive architectural ruins in the foreground and the vast landscape in the background. This recalls other works by Carlo Lodi, such as Landscape with Fishermen and Shepherds (Venturoli-Mattei collection) and a series of tempera paintings in the Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna that were also painted in collaboration with Bertuzzi.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
