PORTRAIT OF AN UPPER-CLASS LADY, 1910

Oil on canvas.
76 x 61 cm.
Signed and dated lower left.

The artist’s teacher was Enrico Pollastrini (1817 - 1876). In 1878/79 he studied in Naples with Domenico Morelli (1823 - 1901) and in 1880 he relocated to Paris, where he became acquainted with Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890). He was inspired by the history- and portrait painter Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat (1833 - 1922), and later also met Gabriele D’Annunzio (1863 - 1938).
The offered painting depicts a lady in half-length with luxurious white fur stole around her décolleté, wearing a two-strand pearl necklace; her hair is pinned-up and she looks at the viewer. Finely painted portrait, created with near photographic precision.
