Andreas Schelfhout,
1787 The Hague - 1870

WINTER LANDSCAPE WITH FROZEN RIVER, ICE SKATERS AND PALACE

Oil on panel.
46 x 61 cm.
Signed lower right.

This remarkable panel painting is undoubtedly a late work by Schelfhout and therefore dates to the period of 1760 - 1770. Characteristics such as the simple and perfectly balanced composition; the precise, naturalistic depiction of the ice with its reflections and traces left by the skaters; the luminous sky; the small dainty figures that seem to disappear into the distance and the narrative vignettes that liven up the scene are all typical features of the artist’s late oeuvre.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
