Anmerkung:
Rückseitig auf der Holzplatte der Sammlervermerk „OH. CHRISTIAN CLAUSEN DAHL / BLICK AUF DIE FARAGLIONI / CAPRI 1821“. Des Weiteren dort aufgeklebte Literatur über Dahls Italienische Studien 1820/ 1821. (1020313) (13)

Johann Christian Clausen Dahl,
1788 - 1857

EVENING VIEW OVER THE FARAGLIONI CLIFFS IN CAPRI

Oil on paper mounted on board.
22.1 x 29 cm.
Signed lower left and dated “Dahl 1821“ with the location “Capri“.
Framed and closed at the back with a wooden panel which is labelled and titled.

In 1820 Crown Prince Christian Friedrich invited the artist Johann Christian Dahl to his summer residence, “Quisisana”, near Naples. Dahl stayed there for two weeks and met many other artists from the German-Danish artists’ settlement, before travelling on to Naples and Castellammare. After his arrival in Naples on 11 August, he began his studies on nature, observing living and dead subjects. Dahl made numerous trips to Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri and Ischia, where he witnessed the eruption of Vesuvius on 20 December 1820. Very good condition with minute selective retouching.

Notes:
On reverse of the wooden panel is the collector‘s note “JOH. CHRISTIAN CLAUSEN DAHL / BLICK AUF DIE FARAGLIONI / CAPRI 1821.”. Literature relative to Dahl‘s Italian studies in 1820/1821 is also glued to the reverse of the panel.
