Es handelt sich hier um eine antike Kopie sehr guter Qualität eines Gemäldes des großen flämischen Meisters Anton van Dyck. Das Original, das heute im Louvre in Paris zu sehen ist, wurde vielfach in seinem Atelier und von seinen Bewunderern kopiert. Das Original von van Dyck stellt das Geschehen (Buch IX von Virgils Aeneis) vertikal dar, allerdings gibt es auch eine horizontale Fassung, die heute im Kunsthistorischen Museum in Wien ausgestellt ist, die im 17. Jahrhundert ebenfalls häufig kopiert wurde.
Das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt Venus, die eine an Tizian erinnernde Sinnlichkeit besitzt, aus einem von unten kommenden Blickwinkel, der sie noch imposanter erscheinen lässt, wie sie soeben die Schmiede ihres Gatten Vulkan betritt und ihn bittet, eine Rüstung für ihren Sohn Aeneas zu schmieden. Unser Gemälde ist eine fast identische Kopie des Gemäldes im Louvre, datierbar um 1630 während des zweiten Aufenthaltes van Dycks in Antwerpen, nur sind hier die Farbkontraste stärker ausgeprägt und die Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste härter und simpler. Dies unterstreicht die Charakteristiken des van Dyckschen Originals, dessen monumentale Bildkonstruktion und prachtvolle venezianische Farbpalette mit ihren eleganten Schattierungen und unvergleichlichen Zwischentönen. VENUS IN VULCAN’S FORGE

The present painting is an antique high-quality copy of a painting by the great Flemish master Anthony van Dyck. The original, today held at the Louvre, was copied numerous times by his own workshop and his admirers. The present painting depicts Venus (of Titianesque sensuality) from a low angle, making her appearance even more impressive, just entering the forge of her husband Vulcan to ask him to forge armour for her son Aeneas. Our painting is an almost identical copy of the Louvre painting, dateable to ca. 1630 during van Dyck’s second stay at Antwerp, except that the colour contrasts are more pronounced and the contrasts of light and dark are harsher and simpler in the present version. It emphasizes the characteristics of van Dyck’s original: its monumental composition and magnificent Venetian colour palette with its elegant shadowing and unparalleled colour shading.
