THE ALLEGORY OF PEACE TRIUMPHING OVER WAR

Oil on canvas.
158 x 121.5 cm.
Framed.

The painting is accompanied by a copy of an expert's report by Daniele Benati.

In a 2008 publication, Nicholas Turner attributed this remarkable painting to Pellegrino, only later it was agreed that the true creator of the work probably was his younger brother Domenico Tibaldi. An existing signed copper engraving by Domenico Tibaldi is directly linked with the present painting as it literally borrows the (mirrored) pictorial composition. Domenico was renowned for his copper engraving and he also worked as an architect. It was only in 2011, after a publication of an essay by Daniele Benati, that Domenico Tibaldi was discovered as a painter. The art historian succeeded in gathering Tibaldi's painted oeuvre. These works stand out due to their originality and quality and the artist therefore takes his place decidedly amongst the most famous artists of the late Bolognese Mannerism. Benati clearly points out that the depiction of the naked god of war (whose physical body evokes Michelangelo) is notably different from Pellegrino Tibaldi's painting style and is closer to the more distanced and academic painting style of Lorenzo Sabbatini. The present painting is clearly reminiscent of the four “Storie di San Paolo“, which could previously be seen collectively at the church San Michele in Bosco, but have since been separated. This remains Domenico Tibaldi's only documented commissioned work.
