Ab 1911 verbrachte Nolde, der eigentlich Hans Emil Hansen hieß, sich aber den Namen seines Geburtsortes als Künstlername zueignete, die Wintermonate in Berlin. Seine Wohnung lag in der Nähe des Zoos. Seine dortigen Besuche von Zoo und Aquarium führten 1923 und 1924 zu einer Folge von besonders reizvollen Aquarellen, zu denen diese Komposition von drei Schleierschwänzen gehört. Besonders gut gelingt Nolde die dreidimensionale Vorstellung des in Bewegung versetzten Wassers, das er durch Aufbringung der Blaupigmente auf das Japanpapier in verschiedener Dichte und Intensität versteht bildnerisch darzustellen. Kleiner Einriss und wenige Stauchfalten.

Sammlung Dr. Heinrich Becker, Bielefeld, Geschenk des Künstlers 1933, bis 1972.
