Die Église d‘Essert erhebt sich über die niedrige Bebauung des kleinen Städtchens, das auch heute nicht mehr als 200 Einwohner zählt, hinweg und bildet den nach links gerückten Mittelpunkt unseres Gemäldes. Das an dem Flüsschen Cure gelegene Kleinod mit teils mittelalterlicher Bebauung wird in unserem Bild von einer Kopfweide überfangen, die mit ihren im Sommerwind flirrenden Blättern das bewegte Schimmern des fließenden Flusses gleichsam widerspiegelt und gleichzeitig der Bewegung einen Rahmen bietet mittels des Baumstammes, der am Ufer Halt gefunden hat. Luce, von dem wir viele Pariser Stadtbilder kennen, schuf dieses ruhige Sommerbild, dessen Charme in den warmen Farben liegt sowie im Wechselspiel von lähmender Statik und leiser Bewegung.
Luce studierte an der Malschule Académi Suisse, bildete sich weiter bei Eugène Froment. In Lagny gründete er zusammen mit Camille Pissarro eine Künstlergruppe, die sich mit den Farbtheorien von Georges Seurat auseinandersetzte. Letztlich gelangte er zu einem hohen Ruf als Impressionist und Pointillist. (†)

Signed lower left. Stretcher titled and dated “1906 – 1909” on the reverse, exhibition labels and collectors’ stamps.

The Église d’Essert is the focal point in this painting, placed slightly to the left of the centre. It rises above the low buildings of the little town, which has a population of no more than 200 even today. (†)
