Das Brustbild im Oval zeigt den Kardinal in entsprechend rotem Habitus mit weißem Kragen und grauem Kinnbart. Das Haupthaar an den Schläfen ebenfalls leicht ergraut. Sacchetti entstammt einer florentinischen Patrizierfamilie. Er wurde Hausprälat von Papst Paul V, dann 1623 Bischof von Gravina und unter Urban VIII zum Kardinal ernannt. Sein bekanntes ganzfiguriges Portrait schuf Pietro da Cortona um 1626, erkennbar mit noch dunklem Bart. Somit wäre das vorliegende Bildnis später einzuordnen.

In ganz ähnlicher Auffassung hatte Guido Reni ein Halbbildnis eines anderen Kardinals – nämlich Berlinghiero Gessi (1563 Bologna – 1639 Rom) – geschaffen, das sich in der Kirche Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rom befindet. Die Ähnlichkeit der beiden Kardinäle ist augenfällig. In diesem – und in weiteren Bildnissen – wird Gessi mit grauem Bart gezeigt.

Ein Portrait aus der Sammlung Marchese Alessandro Facchinetti (etc.) wurde im Kunsthandel 2015 als ein Werk von Guido Reni expertisiert, jedoch mit Nennung des Kardinals Sacchetti. Da üblicherweise bedeutende Persönlichkeiten mehrfach wiederholt wurden, ist eine absolut sichere Zuweisung kaum möglich. Davon abgesehen zeigt das vorliegende Portrait dennoch die Handschrift eines Malers von Rang. A.R. (1480681) (2) (11)

PORTRAIT OF THE ROMAN CURIAL CARDINAL CESARE SACCHETTI (1587 – 1663)

The bust-length portrait depicts the cardinal in a red habit with a white collar and a grey beard. His well-known full-length portrait by Pietro da Cortona, ca. 1626, shows him with a still-dark beard, which suggests a later dating of the present work. Guido Reni painted a half-portrait of another cardinal, namely Berlinghiero Gessi (1563 Bologna – 1639 Rome), in a very similar manner; this portrait is now in the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome. A portrait formerly in the collection of Marchese Alessandro Facchinetti (etc.) was attributed on the art market in 2015 to Guido Reni, with the identification as Cardinal Sacchetti. As important figures were often depicted more than once within workshop practice, a secure attribution is not possible. Nevertheless, the present portrait still reflects the hand of painter of considerable quality.
