Die biblische Episode von Noahs Trunkenheit (Gen 9,20–27) schildert, wie Noah nach der Sintflut einen Weinberg anlegte, Wein kelterte und sich berauschte. In diesem Zustand lag er entblößt in seinem Zelt. Sein Sohn Ham entdeckte ihn so und berichtete seinen Brüdern Sem und Jafet davon. Diese gingen respektvoll vor: Sie bedeckten ihren Vater, ohne ihn anzusehen. Daraufhin segnete Noah Sem und Jafet, während er Ham verfluchte.
Die vorliegende Darstellung geht auf einen Holzschnitt des deutschen Künstlers Hans Sebald Beham (1500–1550) zurück, der in den Biblicae Historiae erschien, erstmals 1533 in Frankfurt veröffentlicht. Das Werk gehört zu den frühesten kleinformatigen illustrierten Bibelausgaben und entwickelte sich über mehr als ein Jahrhundert hinweg zu einer zentralen Bildquelle für die Majolika-Malerei. Mehr als zwanzig bekannte Majolika-Teller zeigen alttestamentliche Szenen nach Holzschnitten Behams. Sie stammen vermutlich aus einem zusammengehörigen Service und wurden wahrscheinlich in der Werkstatt von Guido Durantino (gen. Fontana) gefertigt.
